Geiger–Marsden gold-foil scattering

Layer 2 — Chemistryin the atomic-structure subtree

1909–13 experiment firing α-particles at a thin gold foil and finding a small fraction backscattered. The large-angle scattering rate is incompatible with the diffuse-charge Thomson model and consistent with a dense positive nucleus.
